The universe of Outlander is growing as Starz wants to delve further into the past with its spinoff Outlander: Blood of My Blood.
The network’s previously promised prequel series now has an official title while it is still in development. Starz announced the announcement on Outlander’s social media, writing, “The #Outlander universe is growing! STARZ has announced the creation of Outlander: Blood of My Blood, a prequel that will trace the love story of Jamie Fraser’s parents.”
The writers’ room for the new drama series, which will chronicle the love tale of Highlander Jamie Fraser’s (Sam Heughan) parents Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, has officially started. The prequel series has been rumored for some time, and early this year, more specific details concerning roles behind the scenes were disclosed.
Outlander’s Matthew B. Roberts has been tapped to write Outlander: Blood of My Blood, and he will also act as showrunner and executive producer, as he did for the original series. The seventh season of Outlander is presently under production in Scotland.
Maril Davis will also executive produce
Maril Davis will also executive produce the prequel alongside Ronald D. Moore, who created Outlander for television through their Tall Ship Productions. The program will also be executive produced by Story Mining & Supply Company, with novelist Diana Gabaldon serving as a consultant producer. Gabaldon revealed a book about Jamie’s parents in February, with the source material expected to be released before the program premieres.
“Outlander is a compelling program that has won the hearts of its fans across the world from season to season,” said Kathryn Busby, Starz’s President of Original Programming, in a statement. “We are delighted to peel back the layers of this colourful universe to show our viewers where it all started.” Matthew, Maril, and Ronald will bring their exceptional vision and creativity to this new edition, and we can’t wait to see what happens next.”
Sony Pictures Television will produce Outlander: Blood of My Blood, while Karen Bailey, Starz’s Executive Vice President of Original Programming, will supervise the prequel’s creative process. Stay tuned for more information on the program as it develops on Starz.
