Amir Arison had to deal with two jarring problems when he played Aram on The Blacklist.

“The Blacklist” is a mix of long, slow-burning stories and procedurals about a case of the week. In a 2019 interview with the Actor’s Audience (via YouTube), Amir Arison said that this was one of the hardest things about playing Aram. The other problem, which is closely related to the first, is making sure that the character’s personality and long-term arc stay the same, no matter how the episode is written.

“Playing the same character for six years is the biggest challenge,” Arison said. “In the past five or six years, I’ve grown and changed as a person. And the character has, too. And they’ve really given him a beautiful gift; they’ve written me all kinds of great stories. But we also do the cases every week, and the main purpose of the show, from a procedural point of view, is to present cases, solve cases, and find solutions to cases. […] So, making sure a character stays the same but also changes.”

Arison talked about a particularly hard time after Liz Keen’s fake death in Season 3 as an example of this. After Aram’s funeral, which broke his heart, he had to go back to work, which changed how Arison had to play the character.

“How do you go to work after getting high, crying, and going to the funeral of your best friend?” was how the actor put it. “I worked on that for a long time to try to find a way and a reason to move forward.”

The fact that Aram went from being a minor character to the main one shows how hard Arison worked to play the role. This interesting look at his process shows that he put in a lot of hard work to meet any challenge.
