The Season 5 Trailer for The Crown Is Finally Here, and Heres Our First Look at The New Cast in Action

The fifth season of The Crown will begin in the 90s, a time described as the royal familys greatest challenge to date, with political and personal events that will have a significant impact on Queen Elizabeths reign.

During this new season, the 40th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth IIs accession approaches, allowing her to reflect on the nine prime ministers she has served under, the advent of mass television also known as the 24-hour news cycle and the twilight of the British Empire.

During this time, Queen Elizabeth endures the fall of the Soviet Union, the transfer of sovereignty in Hong Kong, which signals a seismic shift in the international order, and other political changes, while everything in the United Kingdom is also changing. On a personal level, Season 5 of The Crown will examine Prince Charles and Princess Dianas tense relationship as Charles applies pressure on Queen Elizabeth to divorce Diana.

As rumors circulate about the status of Charles and Dianas relationship, media scrutiny intensifies for Diana in particular, prompting her to violate family protocol and publish a book that undermines public support for Charles and reveals the fractures in the House of Windsor.

According to Netflixs Official Description

Season 5 of The Crown will also introduce Mohamed al-Fayed and his son Dodi Fayed, who are attempting to gain a seat at the royal table. Anyone familiar with the history of the royal family is aware that we are approaching the tragic deaths of Diana and Dodi in 1997.

Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Dominic West as Prince Charles, and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana are introduced in the trailer.

Obviously, Imelda Stauntons portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II is the third time this role has been played by a different actor in the history of the show. Claire Foy and Olivia Colman, both Emmy Award-winning actresses, have previously portrayed this character.

As stated previously, this period of royal family history was heavily covered by the media, from television news to tabloids and beyond, so its fascinating to see some of the most iconic photos and moments recreated in this trailer alone.

Consider this 1994 side-by-side comparison of Elizabeth Debicki and Princess Diana in the iconic black revenge dress. Anyway, I cannot wait to watch Season 5 of The Crown because I am confident that these actors will bring this period in the royal familys history vividly to life.
