The Queen’s Gambit Season 2: Release Date, Renewed or Cancelled?

“The Queen’s Gambit” unexpectedly became a great hit for Netflix last fall because to its captivating, self-destructive lead, mastery of turning chess into an exciting sport, and beautiful historical sets. The seven-episode limited series, which was based on Walter Tevis’s 1983 novel, has now been nominated for two Golden Globe Awards.

Despite being raised in an orphanage, Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) develops an addiction to pills at an early age, as is depicted in The Queen’s Gambit. Chess became a major part of her life for the following few decades, as she worked to become the World Chess Champion while dealing with substance misuse and depression.

It appeared that Beth had achieved her goal and was now sitting in a Russian park, dressed as the white queen herself, to play chess with the locals. What’s next, then?

When will the second season of The Queen’s Gambit premiere?

A second season has yet to be announced. It took a long time to get only one season from concept to Netflix’s top-rated series. In fact, when co-creator Alan Scott first became involved with the idea, he didn’t even know Netflix existed.

He was expecting to do a feature film. “It’s amazing to know that people enjoyed the show to the point where they want to spend more time with these characters; we never envisioned it that way,” executive producer William Horberg told Deadline on the possibility of a second season.

He continued, “We thought the series came to a satisfying conclusion, so we’d let the audience fill in the blanks on Beth Harmon’s next steps. Despite supporters’ demands for more on my Twitter account, nothing has changed.

[Co-creator and director] Scott and I are overjoyed that Beth’s narrative is now complete.” Still, HBO’s Big Little Lies is a prime example of a novel adaption promoted as a miniseries getting an unplanned second season. However, it’s easy to rule out a second season in 2021, but it’s possible in 2022.

Who will appear in season 2 of The Queen’s Gambit?

Without Anya Taylor-Joy as Beth Harmon, The Queen’s Gambit wouldn’t be The Queen’s Gambit, thus a second season would have to include her or risk going flat. She added in an interview with Deadline, “People want a second season because it’s so strange and lovely, but we never considered it, and there was no discussion about it. Never say ‘never’ in Hollywood, though.”

Taylor-Joy told Town & Country that she would play Beth again if the opportunity arose, but she also likes Beth’s ending as it is. “She stated,” she said “I believe we have left Beth in a wonderful position. I believe the rest of her life will undoubtedly be an adventure, particularly in her quest for peace, or at the very least the ability to be content with who she is.

I believe it comes to a satisfactory conclusion.” Nonetheless, it would be exciting to see some of Beth’s friends return, such as gentle Harry Beltik (Harry Melling) and cowboy Benny Watts (Thomas Brodie-Sangster).

There is no additional source material to work with as The Queen’s Gambit was adapted from a single novel. Any second season would have to be written from scratch, but the creators would be free to continue in any path they wanted.

The question remains unanswered: what happens once Beth reaches her career pinnacle? She’s at the top now, having accomplished what she’d been working toward for a long time, but it just welcomes more change into her life.

“It would be very interesting to see how Beth would be as a mother, now that she’s clean and more mindful of the demons that pull her down,” Taylor-Joy said to Deadline in a recent interview.

A second season might investigate Beth’s potentially shifting priorities and return her to the array of characters who gathered behind her in her final match, given her new outlook on personal relationships.
