The Ring of Power Season 1 Reviews: In A Suspenseful Episode Sauron Makes Himself Known!

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has a predetermined ending, like the majority of prequels. No matter how many new characters and settings the writers add, by the time the show reaches its intended conclusionafter five seasons, if everything goes as plannedwe will have seen the events that brought an end to the Second Age of Middle-earth and resulted in Saurons all-powerful One Ring disappearing for thousands of years before finally turning up in a hobbits pocket.

Contrary to most prequels, The Rings of Power debuted with a large portion of its plot already exhaustively plotted out, thanks to the Middle-earth historical morsels J.R.R. Tolkien hid in both The Lord of the Rings novels main text and their enormous appendices. This is the reason why viewers of this series have been paying special attention to characters with names they are unfamiliar with in order to determine how they fit into the Tolkien story.

Stranger Danger

This episode hints at the potential that the Stranger is Sauron before the major Halbrand-as-Sauron revelation, as the enigmatic white-clad mystics manage to locate him and then unexpectedly bend down and swear allegiance to their Dark Lord. All of this occurs before the opening titles in a deft narrative trick designed to prevent the spectator from realizing too soon that Halbrand is our Big Bad.

As it happens, significant new information regarding the Stranger has emerged this week, though it is far more mundane than unexpected: He is one of the Istari, sometimes known as wise ones or wizards, as we discover. Even while we still dont know the name of this large man, by the episodes conclusion, following a tense battle between the Harfoots and the mystics in which Sadoc gives his life and the Stranger is granted access to a potent magic staff, we learn his name.

The Ones Who See

Galadriel said, I know how it feels to be the only one who sees, earlier this season while attempting to convince Mriel to support her cause. Galadriel also expressed sympathy for the Queen-Regent and her taxing duties. One of this shows more compelling motifs, though, has been the notion that heroes might adhere to a course of honor and logic with total certainty and still come to the incorrect conclusionor, worse, even bring about the very thing they were attempting to stop.

In Galadriels case, she lures her sworn enemy Sauron into Eregion where he then convinces Celebrimbor to use the mithril to make an alloy, in the form of a crown, in order to increase Elronds meager supply of mithril. Galadriel needs to use Halbrand as a symbol to motivate her Nmenrean army. This is why she brings Halbrand into the picture.

Galadriel is dubious of Halbrands sudden desire to construct something that will grant power over the flesh, so she asks an archive to look up the genealogies of the Southlands, which reveals that the areas last king passed away centuries ago without leaving a descendant. She has not only fallen for Saurons trick, but she has also given him access to a force that could permanently alter the balance of power in Middle-earth.

Island Life

The other main plot in the epilogue includes Miriel returning to Nmenor, where she discovers that her father has passed away, but not before he had first instructed Erien, Elendils daughter, on how to locate his Palantir and asked her to assist in guiding the kingdom back to its old ways. Nor has been a great setting for this series, and before Elendil and Miriel left, we were given a lot of hints about the unexplored history and courtly intrigue that Season 2 should be beneficial in exploring.

The Path Continues Forever

Despite all of that, the thing that has surprised me the most about this first season is how much more remarkable everything has been than I had anticipated. The costumes, settings, special effects, language, and even the brief musical and comedic interludes were all obviously created with much care and expense.

Beyond what any other television show on the air right now is attempting, The Rings of Power has delivered spectacle and scale. However, the creators also demonstrated a mastery of that glitz and opulence, using it to construct a compelling narrative. This show is far from flawless, but for the most part, it delivers what it needs to: a page-turning fantasy novel on television that fans can get lost in.
