The finale of Our Kind of People ended on a cliffhanger, but viewers will never find out whether Leah lives or dies because Fox has canceled the seductive and soapy drama.
Our Kind of People, created by former mixed-ish showrunner Karin Gist and executive-produced by Empire’s Lee Daniels, focused on the Black, affluent, and fantastic residents of Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard.
Alumnus of Chicago Medical School Angela, played by Yaya DaCosta, is a social climber and single mother who came to the Bluffs to discover her biological father’s name and establish her hair care brand.
In the conclusion, Angela and her half-sister Leah (Nadine Ellis) were planned to work together at Angela’s company until a mysterious shooter accidentally killed Leah instead of their father Teddy Franklin (Joe Morton). Morris Chestnut (The Resident) played Leah’s husband Raymond Dupont, and Debbi Morgan played Angela’s Aunt Piggy in Our Kind of People.
With Live+7 DVR playback factored in, Our Kind of People averaged 2.1 million total weekly viewers and a 0.5 demo rating through the 10th episode (out of 12). As a result, it came in fifth place among Fox’s six dramas this season, trailing only fellow rookie The Big Leap, which was canceled in March.
Out of The Resident, Our Kind of People had only 42 percent audience retention and had reached an audience low as recently as January 18th (though it did tick up with its Jan. 25 finale).
