His second album, “Resurrection,” released in 1994, marked the start of both his financial success and critical praise. Rappers Westside Connection and Common got into a fight over his song “I Used to Love H.E.R.” in the middle of the 1990s. Westside Connection retaliated to Common with their song “Westside Slaughter.”

In 1997, Common released his third album, “One Day It’ll All Make Sense,” which resulted in a record deal with MCA Records. His fourth album, “Like Water for Chocolate,” became his first to receive a gold certification, and one of the album’s hits received a Grammy nomination. The College Dropout, Kanye West’s debut album, featured Common in early 2004.

Kanye West produced much of his subsequent album, “Be,” which went gold and garnered four Grammy nominations in 2005. Finding Forever, Common’s seventh studio album was released in July 2007. It was up for Best Rap Album at the Grammys, but Kanye West’s “Graduation” won. Between 1992 and 2017, Common put issued 11 studio albums, winning two BET Awards, two Grammys (Best Rap Performance by Duo or Group for “Southside” in 2008; Best R&B Song for “Love of My Life” in 2003), and eleven Grammy nominations.
