Amy Poehler Career

After participating in the undergraduate improv group, Amy was motivated to pursue a career in comedy. As a result, after graduation, she traveled to Chicago and participated in ImprovOlympic’s first professional improv class. During this time, Poehler got to know Tina Fey. Together, they joined the touring company of the Second City. Poehler later joined The Upright Citizens Brigade, a sketch comedy and improv troupe (UCB). Poehler was one of four UCB members that relocated to New York City in 1996. Around the city, the UCB members gave performances in tinier locations. Additionally, Poehler frequently performed in sketches on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.” The half-hour sketch comedy series from UCB premiered on Comedy Central in 1998 and ran for three seasons before being discontinued in 2000.

At the start of the 2001–2002 season, Poehler was recruited as a featured performer on “Saturday Night Live” (SNL). This was her big break. Tina Fey fought for Poehler’s appearance on SNL for years. During her first season on the show, she was elevated to full cast member. In the 2004–2005 season, she and Tina Fey co–anchored Weekend Update.
