Scott Piercy Controversy

Golfer Scott Piercy posted what appeared to be an apology on his Instagram story one day after tweeting a homophobic meme about former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg dropping out of the 2020 race.

After the former mayor of Indiana announced he was stopping his bid for the Democratic nomination, Piercy’s article on Monday included an anti-gay slur that emphasised Buttigieg’s sexuality as a gay man: Peter leaves early and from behind.

That’s not all, though. Additionally, Piercy’s tweet included a far-right conspiracy theory from QAnon about a covert plan by the ‘deep state’ to harm President Trump and his supporters. The FBI has identified QAnon as a possible domestic terrorism source.

The PGA Tour informed Golf Digest

The PGA Tour informed Golf Digest that it was made aware of Scott’s comments and that it was “disappointed with the lack of judgement used.” Regarding if Piercy transgressed the Tour’s “behaviour unbecoming of a professional” rule, nothing was said. The four-time PGA Tour champion is taking part in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in Orlando, Florida, as GolfChannel.com reported. Piercy turned down a request for a comment from a website reporter.

Instead, he apologised in a semi-formal way on Tuesday, writing: “Whenever I Post, My Intent Is NEVER To Offend. I will do better, I said, “I want to apologise if any of my recent story posts have been insensitive. Note the word “if” that Piercy used. The native of Las Vegas has made 298 career PGA Tour starts, recorded four victories, and earned more over $20 million.
