Robert Irvine Controversy: The Food Network Investigates Chef Irvine’s Resume Fraud and Rehires

Robert Irvine Controversy: We learned in March that Chef Robert Irvine had been fired from his Food Network show Dinner Impossible for falsifying his CV. Irvine stated that he baked the dessert for Princess Diana’s royal wedding and that Queen Elizabeth gave him a castle.

Irvine was merely benched for a year, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, and will return to the program in the future season. See the list below. When Michael Symon was given the role of presenter of the famous cable television series “Dinner: Impossible,” fans understood he was taking over for a disgraced chef.

They had no idea Symon would just be a temporary substitute. Officials from Food Network revealed that previous series presenter Robert Irvine will return to “Dinner Impossible.” Irvine has been rehired to film six additional episodes for the show, which will debut in March 2009.

Irvine’s dismissal as series host was supposedly due to a CV filled with a variety of exaggerations and misleading representations. In an article published in the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times last February, reporter Ben Montgomery refuted various Irvine claims, including that he helped bake the cake for Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s fairytale wedding, held the title of Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, and that his friend, Queen Elizabeth II, had given him a castle.

Robert Irvine Controversy

A Food Network official explained Irvine’s return to the show in a statement to the media. “Our audience has continued to show their interest in and support for Robert,” said Carrie Welch, a network spokesperson. “He has accepted responsibility and made a concerted effort to clarify the air, repair the relationship with Food Network, and apologize for previous errors.” We’re big Michael Symon fans here in Cleveland, so we’re sad to see him depart, but Irvine was more suited for the position.

I have no reservations about Irvine’s return, but I support Food Network’s appropriate punishment for resume fraud. This is a widespread issue in today’s workplace, and it is critical that individuals understand that the actions they make have consequences. When doing verifications between what an application represents and what an employer or academic institution reports, we continue to uncover a roughly 60% disagreement rate.
