On April 20, 1945, Stephen Orr Spurrier was born in Miami Beach, Florida. Steve, who was raised by a Presbyterian preacher, and his family moved around a lot when he was a small child. The family had relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, before to Spurrier’s first birthday.

Steve eventually received a scholarship offer from the University of Florida, where head coach Ray Graves assured him of his chances of succeeding as the starting quarterback. Despite his early promise, a knee injury prevented him from taking the pole position. He had become a superb quarterback by 1964, tossing numerous touchdown passes. Steve won the Heisman Trophy and set numerous records between 1965 and 1966.

He was chosen to play in the NFL in 1967 by the San Francisco 49ers. But initially, his time in the NFL was disappointing. Before the starting quarterback got hurt in 1972, he didn’t get many chances to play. He performed admirably at first, but then his play began to deteriorate. He subsequently misplaced his starting position once more. He was sent to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after a few inconsistent seasons with the 49ers before being released in 1977.
