With their a cappella version of “Caravan of Love,” the Housemartins achieved a UK number-one single. On July 16, 1963, Quentin Leo Cook was born in Bromley, Kent, England. His first name was later changed to Norman. Cook was raised in the Surrey town of Reigate and went to Reigate Grammar School.

He studied the violin as a child, and when he was a teenager, his brother brought The Damned’s debut album home, sparking his interest in punk music. After playing in a few punk bands, Norman joined Disque Attack, a rock band with new wave influences, as their drummer. Cook took over as lead vocalist after the band’s original lead singer had to leave in order to concentrate on his O levels.

At The Railway Tavern, he first met Paul Heaton, with whom he later co-founded the Stomping Pondfrogs band. At the age of 18, Norman enrolled at Brighton Polytechnic to pursue his interests in politics, sociology, and English. He graduated with a 2:1 in British Studies. He started honing his DJing abilities in Brighton clubs while he was in college under the alias DJ Quentox.

From 1986 to 1988, Norman was married to Philippa Watson. On August 20, 1999, he wed radio and television host Zoe Ball. Cook and Ball welcomed a son named Woody on December 15, 2000, and a daughter named Nelly on January 14, 2010. In September 2016, the couple announced their separation.

Since the late 1980s, Norman has been a fan of the football team Brighton & Hove Albion and is now a shareholder of the team. He had to postpone his scheduled appearance at the music and sports festival Snowbombing in 2009 as he sought alcoholism treatment at a Bournemouth rehab facility. Cook celebrated ten years of sobriety in 2019.
