Early Life

In Baltimore, Maryland, on June 30, 1985, Michael Phelps was born. He went to Towson High School, Dumbarton Middle School, and Rodgers Forge Elementary School. He has two elder siblings, two brothers and sisters. His father Michael is a former Maryland State Trooper, and his mother Deborah is a middle school administrator.

Phelps originally started participating in swimming when he was 7 years old. This was mostly because of his sisters’ influence and to provide him a way to release his energy. Michael Phelps, being just 15 years old, earned a spot on the American Olympic squad for the Summer Olympics of 2000. In 68 years, Phelps qualified as the team’s youngest member.

Phelps broke the 200-meter butterfly world record in 2001 at the World Aquatics Championship Trials. He achieved a swimming world record that day, becoming the youngest man ever.

Phelps won four gold medals, and two silver medals, and set five world records in the 2003 World Aquatics Championships. Phelps also owns the records for the most Olympic gold medals, individual Olympic gold medals, and individual Olympic medals.
