Born on August 29, 1958, Sir Lenworth George Henry CBE is a British actor, comedian, singer, television presenter, and writer.

The Lenny Henry Show, which premiered in 1984, was the culmination of Henry’s popularity as a stand-up comedian and impressionist in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He was the most well-known black comedian in Britain at the time, and a lot of his work celebrated and mocked his African and Caribbean background.

He and the comedic scriptwriter Richard Curtis co-founded the nonprofit organization Comic Relief in 1985. He has made appearances in many more TV shows, such as the children’s show Tiswas, the sitcom Chef!, and the BBC One movie The Magicians. In subsequent years, he has shifted to playing roles on stage and in films. He will feature in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Amazon Prime. Henry is Birmingham City University’s chancellor.

On August 29, 1958, Lenworth George Henry was born at Burton Road Hospital in Dudley to Jamaican immigrants Winston Jervis Henry (1910–1978) and Winifred Louise Henry (1922–1998).

Henry, the fifth of the family’s seven children, was the first to be born in the UK. When Henry was ten years old, he started spending time with Albert Augustus “Bertie” Green (1927-2004), another Jamaican immigrant with whom his mother had a brief relationship when she first arrived in England from their native Jamaica. Bertie was eventually proven to be Henry’s biological father. Henry was given the name of the physician who delivered him.

Henry attended St. John’s Primary School in Dudley before moving on to The Blue Coat School and eventually W.R. Tuson College in Preston, Lancashire.

After 25 years of marriage, French and Henry made the announcement that they were “amicably” divorcing on April 6, 2010. In 2010, their divorce became final. Henry has been dating theater producer and casting director Lisa Makin since 2012.

From the Open University, Henry earned a BA Hons in English Literature in 2007, and from Royal Holloway, University of London, he earned an MA in Screenwriting for TV and Film in 2010. He then pursued doctoral studies on the representation of black people in the media at the latter university. Henry has been a vocal opponent of the paucity of racial diversity on British television. He referred to the absence of minorities as “appalling” at a speech at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in March 2014, and he has continued to bring up the subject in public.

In the 1999 New Year’s Honours, Henry received the designation of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). At the 2003 British Comedy Awards, he won the Lifetime Achievement Award. He received a knighthood in the Queen’s 2015 Birthday Honours for his contributions to charity and theater.

Henry was appointed Birmingham City University’s chancellor in July 2016, stating his commitment for providing young people from various origins with opportunities that might change their lives. Additionally, Henry was ranked fourth in 2016’s Powerlist of the 100 Most Influential Black Britons.

Henry was appointed a fellow of the Royal Television Society in 2016. Henry received the 2016 Alan Clarke Award for Outstanding Contribution to TV, a BAFTA Television: Special Award. Additionally in 2016, Henry received an honorary doctorate from Nottingham Trent University in celebration of his noteworthy contributions to British comedy and theater as well as his successes in charitable work around the world.
