After 21 Years At Columbia Records, John Mayer Has Announced That He Is Leaving

John Mayer announced his departure from Columbia Records on Friday, the label where he has been since his debut album was released in 2001. The surprising announcement comes during a break in his national tour in support of “Sob Rock,” which appears to be his final Columbia album.

“After 21 years, eight studio albums, and some wonderful personal and creative relationships, I have decided not to renew my recording agreement with Columbia Records,” Mayer wrote on Instagram. I’m excited to pursue new avenues of making music, both on my own and with other artists, as difficult as it is to say goodbye.”

“I love music more than ever, and I believe some of my best work is yet to come,” he concluded. John, with thanks and joy.” Mayer, unlike his other Instagram postings, did not allow comments on this one.

Columbia representatives did not respond to Variety’s request for comment right away. Mayer’s independent representatives have stated that the musician will make no further statements in the near future.

Mayer’s comments will be interpreted in many ways as to where any disagreements between him and Columbia brass lie, with the emphasis on working “with other artists” implying that he may be interested in pursuing further collaborations, such as his ongoing side career as a frontman for Dead & Co. Alternatively, the phrase “greatest work remains ahead” could imply that he feels taken for granted as a catalog artist rather than a present artist.

Although he has given few interviews in the wake of “Sob Rock,” he did attend Variety’s Hitmakers event in December to deliver a label of the year award to Columbia’s Ron Perry and Jennifer Mallory, implying that he was at least somewhat pleased with the imprint’s management just three months ago.

He raced through a claimed list of nominees for the Hitmakers label of the year — even though it’s not a competitive award with actual runners-up — before opening an envelope and feigned surprise that it was his own label — in a rollickingly entertaining speech. Later, he became more solemn, as though thanking Columbia for believing in his idea for the “Sob Rock” album.

“It’s our responsibility as artists to be unreasonable,” he remarked. “We get notions that we can’t get rid of.” Ron, Jen, and the rest of the staff have developed a working relationship that is, in my 20-year tenure as a Columbia recording artist, the most open-minded and enjoyable I’ve ever experienced.”

He did, however, take a joke at how he felt “Sob Rock” had done in the market, with the hyperbolic quip that it had “shattered local streaming records” and was a “big hit in Canoga Park,” which seemed self-deprecating at the time.

Last July, the album opened at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, with two consecutive singles reaching No. 1 on the AAA chart, albeit neither made the Top 100.

With cover design, videos, and a marketing campaign that took a tongue-in-cheek, almost subliminally retro approach to his affection for a classic period of pop, “Sob Rock” was an unusual project that skewed toward very commercial sounds — but the very commercial sounds of the late 1970s and 1980s, with cover design, videos, and a marketing campaign that took a tongue-in-cheek, almost subliminally retro approach to his affection for a classic period of pop Even the album art’s type styles and the “Nice Price” faux-sticker hinted at an honest songwriting approach with a wink in the delivery. Columbia appeared to like the notion, giving out promotional things that looked like they were from the yacht-rock/early-MTV eras.

In a review, Variety called the album “the funniest marketing campaign in recent music history,” adding, “That campaign is really inextricably linked to the new record itself, a dare that invites you to enter the album already having laughed till you’ve cried, then stick around for a less ironic dab at the eyes.” To put it another way, the dang thing works.”

When admitting that he had been diagnosed with COVID, Mayer recently postponed many gigs, following several earlier shows with a reduced lineup after two members of the band tested positive. The tour will resume on March 11 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, followed by three nights at the Forum in Los Angeles on March 13, 15, and 16.
