Mena Suvari Alleges That Her Controlling Ex “Manipulated” Her Into Threesomes That She “Never Wanted,” And That It “Still Weighs On Me.”

telling her tale. Mena Suvari talked openly about how being subjected to sexual assault changed her perspective on sex and her sense of self, particularly after being “manipulated” by a past boyfriend.

The 43-year-old American Beauty actress first discussed the romance in her 2021 memoir, The Great Peace, when she wrote, “I was not being loved. I was merely a vessel for his needs, a body. Suvari claimed in an interview with The Guardian that her ex-boyfriend would take advantage of her to find women for them to have threesomes with in an interview that was published on Wednesday, July 27.

I want you to know that I never wanted to do any of those things, I remarked when I ran across one of those women years later, the Six Feet Under alum recalled. “She was taken aback. Oh, he told me you wanted to do that, she said. I had no idea I was being manipulated, which was a major eye-opener for me. The situation had been set up specifically for me, and it just engulfed me.

Suvari, who has a 15-month-old son named Christopher with her husband Michael Hope, continued by saying that she doesn’t condemn those who choose to express their sexuality through threesomes but instead brings it up to show that she didn’t have the same choice. I’ve never wished to express unfavorable opinions about things that can be really healthy for other people.

It was so destructive for me because I didn’t have the option or authorization to do it, she claimed. When you experience sexual assault, it is a pretty messed-up thing because some of it is, like, satisfying. You’re puzzled and unsure of what’s right because the other portion is a complete nightmare.

The Rhode Island native said in The Great Peace that she was sexually raped when she was 12 years old and continued by saying that the violence she endured throughout her life “still weighs on me because I never got the opportunity to know myself in that way,” according to The Guardian. I find it difficult to fathom dating someone all through high school before deciding to voluntarily lose your virginity to them. I think that sounds really lovely. For me, it was all lost.

In the end, Suvari was able to escape the “worst relationship of my life, where I was being severely abused,” because to her work. She explains that at the time, “it was very dark for me, [and filming] felt like a reprieve, since I could go to work and be significant there.” When she left Los Angeles to film 2001’s Sugar & Spice in another state after 1999’s American Beauty’s filming was finished, her job also provided her with a real escape from her ex.

When talking about her past relationships, the ex-model remained anonymous. While filming Sugar & Spice, she met cinematographer Robert Brinkmann, and the two got married in March 2000.

Suvari admitted in July 2021 that she had been reluctant to tell her experience until she came across some old poetry and childhood journals. She told USA Today at the time, “I felt utterly forced to finally talk, I felt like I needed to simply breathe and I was weary of battling, running, performing, and acting.” “I just felt better living my life genuinely,” she said.

The American Pie actress admitted to The Guardian that she is “still uncomfortable” talking about her history, but she is glad she did. It was bittersweet because it felt wonderful to be heard and recognized, but it was devastating to learn that other people had experienced similar identifications.

Suvari expressed her pride over the response to her memoir: “I didn’t want that for them, but altogether I feel really proud. I’ve always hoped that the book will spur additional discussion and bring about some type of change.
