Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Impressed at The Domestic and International Box Office
In March of the previous year, along with the release of the first teaser trailer, it was announced that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 will premiere during the winter of 2021. The production team then revealed that the film would premiere on Christmas Eve, following an event in Japan. Thankfully, the epidemic had no effect on the premiere of Jujutsu Kaisen 0; on December 24, 2021, the anime film debuted in Japanese theatres.
The response from domestic fans was extraordinary, with over one million tickets sold on opening day and grossing over $23 million in just three days to top the box office charts. In actuality, during its domestic run in Japan in April, the film grossed more than $110 million at the box office; however, other estimates indicate that as of August 2022, this amount is substantially higher, at around $190 million.
This makes Jujutsu Kaisen 0 the second-biggest opening day in Japanese box office history, just behind the sensation that was Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, the highest-grossing film of 2021 globally and the 14th highest-grossing film in Japanese box office history.
In March 2022, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was finally released in theatres outside of Japan. It was previously anticipated to earn between $8 and $13 million in its opening weekend; however, it earned more than $17.7 million and placed second to The Batman.
However, not every anime fan was able to attend the local theatre to view Jujutsu Kaisen 0 on the big screen. On what date will the film be available for OTT streaming, and on which platform will it be shown?
Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Ott Streaming Platform and Release Date Confirmed
During the most recent Crunchyroll Expo, the streaming giant announced that the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film would be made available to subscribers on their global anime platform. Crunchyroll also reported that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 would debut for OTT streaming globally on September 21st, however, it is unknown if this covers both the subbed and dubbed versions.
The anime streaming service was the only major platform outside of Japan to simultaneously broadcast season 1 of the series last year. In March, Crunchyroll and Funimation collaborated to bring the film to theatres in North America and the United Kingdom.
In addition, the Crunchyroll News page was the first to announce the North American theatrical distribution, with a press release titled “Crunchyroll to Bring the JUJUTSU KAIZEN 0 Movie to Theaters on March 18.”
Fans should be aware that while Funimation and Crunchyroll were distributing the picture outside of Japan, the new feature is unlikely to appear on the streaming service. This is because Funimation will be amalgamated with Crunchy following its sale to Sony for $1.17 billion last year. Beginning with the Spring anime lineup, all simulcast titles will be exclusive to the Crunchyroll site.
Fans should also be aware that it is highly improbable that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 will be available on services such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, or Disney Plus outside of Japan and other Asian nations for an extended period of time.
